چکیده

The ray-scene intersection test is the most costly process when a scene is rendered. This process may be improved using any strategy to be able to speed-up it. Generally, any strategy used is based on the building of a spatial indexing in the scene domain or in the rays domain. However, there is no theory to formalize these techniques. In this paper, an acceleration techniques formalization is proposed. This formalization allows an optimizer to be specified according to the spatial index used. Furthermore, a formalization of optimizer composition is presented. Finally, we present an expression which allows to compare several optimizers, and select the one with best performances. This formalization is based on the graphics objects theory and claims to be a generalization to all optimizers which use spatial indexing.

Boundary cell-based acceleration for volume ray casting

ÐSeveral e€ective acceleration techniques for volume rendering o€er ecient means to skip over empty space, providing signi®cant speedup without a€ecting image quality. The e€ectiveness of such an approach depends on its ability to accurately estimate the object boundary inside a volume with minimal computational overhead. We propose a novel boundary cell-based acceleration technique for ray ca...

Implicit Adaptive Volume Ray-Casting

In this work we present an acceleration technique for direct volume rendering, that is based on a preprocessing step. This transforms the original uniform grid into an adaptively reduced tetrahedral grid. The basic idea is to exploit the inherent adaptivity information of the reduced grid for the ray integration with importance sampling. An integration step is always performed from cell face to...

Interactive and Scalable Ray-Casting of Metaballs on the GPU

Metaballs are a useful technique to model blobby surfaces. Because metaballs define an implicit surface, rendering is difficult. We seek to render the surface directly via ray-casting, to precisely locate the isosurfaces and preserve the concise representation of the surface. To perform this rendering at interactive rates on dynamic data, we will use acceleration structures for fast surface cal...

Hybrid ray tracing - ray tracing using gpu-accelerated image-space methods

In recent years, interactive ray tracing has become a reality, although mainly by using clustered workstations and sophisticated acceleration structures. On non-clustered computer architectures this is still not an easy task, especially when rendering animated scenes, even though the computation power of modern workstations is increasing rapidly. In this paper we propose known image-space rende...
